Rep of Georgia, Svaneti Region

(Pt 4)

July 2026

Dates:
06/28/26 to 07/09/26

After returning to Tbilisi from the wine region, we spent a little over a week regrouping and preparing for the first of our “mountain” adventures, 12 days in the Svaneti Region.

From Tbilisi, we took a fast train to Batumi for 1 night before picking up a rental car the following day. We opted for rental car because the transportation options in the area are very limited and usually consist of an overloaded van (with too many people along with all their luggage) driving way too fast. The days of that kind of transportation are way behind us… A rental car was the right choice for our comfort, flexibility, and safety.

The entire Svaneti Region is an absolutely beautiful area with many amazing hikes, stunning scenery, and very delicious and spicy local food (probably our favorite in all of Georgia). Because the area is at elevation and located in the mountains, we planned our time there for early July in hopes of having decent weather. We had a mix of very sunny and hot days along with cold and rainy days, but all in all we couldn’t have asked for anything better. Even though it is more logistically challenging to travel to Svaneti, the extra effort was well worth it. We would happily return given half a chance.
