After spending 3 weeks in N. Macedonia, we moved to our next country, Bulgaria. Despite several transportation challenges in Bulgaria, our time in the country was great. There is plenty to see walking around the capital city of Sofia (this was also where we had one of the best meals of our entire trip). There is beautiful hiking around Bansko, one of our favorite destinations in Bulgaria. Bansko is a very popular ski town in the winter time, but in the summer there is tons of great hiking. Other towns we visited were also beautiful and all have their own unique attributes. Plovdiv, one of the oldest city’s in Europe, is built on 7 hills, all of which you can hike up for views of the city. Stara Zagora has one of the largest city parks we’ve ever seen…offering up tons of walking and hiking paths. Veliko Tarnovo, the former capital, is a traditional Bulgarian town with old world charm. All in all, we really enjoyed our time in Bulgaria and would certainly go back.
