Following our stay in Batumi, we took a train east to Kutaisi (located in the middle part of the country) where we picked up a rental car for 6 days. We wanted to see the Javakheti Region, but the transportation options in and around the area are limited. So, a rental car was our best choice. We chose a location for the rental car pick-up on the outskirts of town, the furthest away from the main part of Kutaisi, in hopes of avoiding as much interaction with the busy city traffic and crazy local drivers. Once out of Kutaisi, the single lane roads in the Javahekti area were relatively stress-free, other than the occasional local driver who would pass us on a blind corner going way too fast. All in all, there were only two areas in the country where we would opt to rent a car and actually drive ourselves. This was one of the areas where it was worth the extra effort to drive ourselves in order to see the area.
